Project Description: Kathmandu-Terai/Madhesh Expressway is a mega highway project which is prioritized as an “infrastructure of national pride”. The Government of Nepal gave the responsibility of construction management to Nepali Army. The 72.5 km long Fast Track runs along the Bagmati River corridor and is expected to cut the travel distance from the capital Kathmandu to the south of the country by 159 km as per existing roads. The Fast Track originates at Sano Khokana of Lalitpur Metropolitan City (south of Kathmandu) and stretches to Nijghad in Bara district in Nepal’s southern plains (known as Terai/Madhesh). There it will meet with the East-West (Mahendra) Highway of the country. The Expressway also includes a 1.35 km long twin tube tunnel. The proposed tunnel width shall be 11m and 22 meter in 2-lane and 4-lane roadway respectively. It will consist of many high-rise concrete bridges connecting steep mountains in order to achieve a smooth gradient and gentle curve sustaining high design speed.

Scope of Services:

1.   Review of all reports, data and information available with the Project and other· publications associated with this work including          International Standards, Codes, and Guidelines;
2.   Visiting all bridge location and carrying out visual inspection to have the general information of site for the estimation of ground          material and accessibility to the investigation site;
3.   Identification of borehole location for abutment exploration;
4.   Drilling of boreholes at selected location to obtain information about the sub­surface material, its nature and strength and to                 collect the samples for strata identification and conducting laboratory tests;
5.   Sampling of soil/ rocks
6.   Testing bulk density, moisture content, unconfined compression and also consolidation test if the soil is CL/ CH or ML/ MH on               undisturbed samples of soil;
7.   Testing and analyzing visual and engineering classification, Sieve, Hydrometer Atterberg’s Limits (LL, PL, Pl), Direct Shear (6.4 cm,          3- point determination) and Specific Gravity on disturbed samples;
8.   Testing water absorption and unconfined compression on rock samples; and
9.   Submission of the report of surface Investigation work incorporating all the processes related to the drilling works with log of                borehole, sampling, tests conducted in boreholes and laboratory tests of collected samples, analysis and Interpretation of data of        theln-situtests from the borehole and laboratory test in an appropriate format.
