Hydrology, Meteorology and Sediment Study of Upper Modi “A” and Upper Modi Hydropower Project
Project: Upper Modi “A” and Upper Modi Hydropower Project
Assignment: Hydrology, Meteorology and Sediment Study of Upper Modi “A” and Upper Modi Hydropower Project
Location: Kaski District, Nepal
Client: AF Consult Switzerland Ltd. in association with ITECO & TMS
Duration: May 2018 to April 2019

Project Description: Upper Modi A HEP is RoR hydroelectric project located in Modi River of Kaski District. The installed capacity of the project is 42 MW with design discharge of 17.4 m3/s and gross head of 287.69 m.
Upper Modi HEP is proposed to be developed as a cascade of Upper Modi A HEP. The flow from tailrace of UMAHEP is diverted to UMHEP through interconnection arrangement/ The installed capacity of the project is 18.2 MW with design discharge of 17.4 m3/s and gross head of 133m.
Scope of Services:
1. Hydrological, Meteorological and Sediment Investigations
a. Install manual rainfall station and operate for four monsoon months in the catchment area of the project;
b. Water Level observation at three different locations (UMAHEP H/W & P/H and UMHEP P/H) in the project area for 13 months in standard frequency;
c. Monthly Discharge Measurement in UMAHEP H/W & P/H and UMHEP P/H for 13 months starting from May 2018-May 2019, maximum measured discharge 136.15 m3/s in August;
d. Discharge Measurement of major tributaries (Chhane Khola and Ghatte Khola) during the dry months;
e. Sediment sample collection by point sampler in H/W of UMAHEP from June to September;
f. Laboratory Analysis (Sediment Concentration Analysis-123 samples, PSD Analysis -4 samples and Mineral Content Analysis- 4 samples) of the collected sediment samples;
g. Water Quality (Hardness) Test-13 samples; and
h. Monthly and Final Reporting of the field works, analysis and laboratory test results.
2. Equipment Used:
a. Current meter, sounding reel, fish weight and crane arrangement for discharge measurement;
b. Rainfall Station for Rainfall observation;
c. Membrane Filtration System for Sediment Concentration Analysis
d. Trinocular Stereo Zoom Microscope for Mineral Content Analysis; and
e. PSD Analyzer (0.4 to 2000 micron) for PSD Analysis.
